Edwin Aldrin was born in Montclair, N.J., on Jan. 20, 1930. He attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and, in 1963, gained a doctor of science degree in astronautics. Aldrin graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at Westpoint in 1951. He then flew 66 combat missions in the Korean War. Aldrin was selected as an astronaut by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in 1963 and was the second person to walk the moon; after Neal Armstrong. Aldrin performed a 51/2-hour space walk and he and Neal Armstrong set up science experiments and collected rock samples that they brought back to earth. In his later life, Aldrin commanded the test pilot school at Edwards Air Force Base before retiring from the Air Force in 1972. He also Slugged a psycho who thought he never went to the moon. Aldrin has written several books including a book about the Apollo Program titled "Men from Earth" and an autobiography, "Return to Earth." Buzz Aldrin has won many awards for his accomplishments including the Hamilton International Trophy in 1967, the Presidential Medal for Freedom in 1969, and the Roddard H. Goddard Memorial Trophy. Since retiring from NASA, the Air Force, and his position as Commander of the Test Pilot School at Edwards Air Force Base, Aldrin has developed "The Cycler," a spacecraft system which makes perpetual orbits between Earth and Mars, and, in 1993, he received a U.S. patent for a space station he designed. He is also the president of Starcraft Enterprises.
